Its location is geographically favorable as it is sandwiched between the Mediterranean Sea and Mariut Lake. This port is responsible for a bulk of Egypt’s economy as it accounts for more than three quarters of Egypt’s foreign trade.

The port of Alexandria consists of two separate parts- the eastern side and the western side. The eastern part of the harbor is not navigable and hence not used for commercial export business. The western side however accounts for the bulk of foreign trade and exports as extensive commercial shipping activity is carried out here. This port has a rich historical legacy as it is believed that owing to sand deposits, the port started becoming unfit for shipping. Then, under the command of Alexander the Great, this harbor regained its lost glory as Alexander used this harbor as the marine base for his army.
